The Buccaneers (Apple TV+) Coming This Week 11/8/23

With all the television shows on my watch list for November and December, I’m feeling the overload already!

This week Apple TV+ is releasing a remake of The Buccaneers, which I have a feeling is going to be nothing like the BBC Adaptation from 1995. Based on a novel written by Edith Wharton, it’s about wealthy young American women coming to England to snag themselves a titled aristocrat. If you know anything about history, many aristocrats were happy to marry these wealthy heiresses, bringing their new money, to restock their coffers of dwindling funds.

The 1995 mini-series was entertaining. However, based on previous quirky period dramas by Apple TV (for example, Emily Dickinson), I’m not sure how faithful this version will stick. Just watching the trailer above, they are obviously overstepping the boundaries of period drama norms. No doubt their target audience of young adults will enjoy it more than we seasoned period drama experts. Nevertheless, if you’re a period enthusiast, tune in. I’ve renewed my Apple TV+ only for this series and for watching Napolean, and then I usually cancel when nothing teases my remote to watch.

Of course, I’ll be reviewing it, so stay tuned. Also, if you want to watch the 1995 series, a link to Prime Video is below.
